"Best Practices in Energy Reduction"

Interaction between users and suppliers provides a way to enhance communication and improve best practices.  This year our annual meeting program will feature two users of industrial process heating in an effort to learn more about best practices today.  We’ll hear from Michele Mazza of Owens Corning and George Bryant of Briggs and Stratton who will define their roles within their specific companies to reduce energy consumption.  They discuss their energy reduction goals and why they are being implemented; they’ll provide an update of what their company has done to date to work towards meeting those goals; they’ll share their thoughts on whether investigating process heating applications is an area that can help achieve goals; whether they’ve implemented any process heating assessment tools to date and how they feel IHEA can assist them in achieving their energy reduction requirements.

Michele and George will also attend IHEA committee meetings on Monday afternoon so that we can further investigate ways IHEA members can assist end users with Best Practices in Energy Reduction.

Michele Mazza, Owens Corning

Michele Mazza is a graduate of James Madison University with a B.S. in Psychology and an M.B.A. in Business Administration.  She has been with Owens Corning for eight years and was hired into the OEM Solutions Group Division of Owens Corning in 2000 as a Plant Leader in Springfield, Tennessee.  Her most recent project began in 2006, as Project Leader over the energy consumption reduction initiative for ISB (Insulating Systems Business) Division.  ISB is one of Owens Corning's largest divisions and encompasses 30 plants across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico as well as Asia Pacific.  Michele has been responsible for establishing an organizational structure and process across the division, the focus of which has been to reduce energy consumption and promote conservation awareness within each ISB manufacturing plant.

George Bryant, Briggs & Stratton

Going “Green” – What Does it Mean?

It seems like everyone is going “green.” But what exactly does this mean and is it worth it? Ken Dulaney, Industrial and Commercial Team Leader at Advanced Energy, will discuss this topic and answer common questions on renewable energy, carbon footprints and sustainability. He’ll help IEHA members understand the terminology and explore ways that different companies are interpreting “green.”

Ken Dulaney, Advanced Energy

Ken Dulaney is the Industrial and Commercial Solutions Team Leader at Advanced Energy, a non-profit in Raleigh, NC whose mission is to create economic, environmental and societal benefits through innovative and market-based approaches to energy issues. Ken conducts energy assessments for industrial customers and develops customized spreadsheets to help them calculate payback on energy efficiency projects. He is also active in plug-in electric vehicle deployment and training development for utility account managers. He is a Professional Engineer and has degrees from Furman, Georgia Tech and the University of Texas.

Economic Outlook 2008

Perhaps more important than ever, a look at our economic outlook from NAM’s Chief Economist will close IHEA’s 79th Annual Meeting program on Wednesay morning, April 16. Plenty of time has been allotted to this presentation this year to allow for member questions and answers.  Always packed with useful and timely information, this year’s outlook is one you won’t want to miss.

David Huether, NAM

Chief Economist of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) where he serves as the organization’s economic forecaster as well as a principal spokesman on economic matters important to America's industrial base.  Before coming to the NAM in 1997, he worked as an economist with the Bureau of Economic Analysis at U.S. Department of Commerce.   David received his undergraduate degree from Guilford College (North Carolina) in 1990 and his graduate degree in economics from George Washington University in 1997.

Who’s On First, Who Cares and How to Bat 500 without Steroids or Government

This presentation will offer a “state of the union” approach to the most recent and anticipated legislation, “rulings,” and other actions/activities of importance to IHEA members..  Rulings include issues related to clarification of authority such as EPA being required to issue requirements related to CO2.  Actions/Activities of import include other organizations showing leadership in areas that parallel our focus, e.g., NEMA electric motor efficiency standards and associated push for tax legislation favoring implementation of equipment.

Charles R. Foster, III, Foster & Jamison

Chuck has worked in the energy industry for more than thirty years. From 1975 until 1990, he worked for a mechanical contracting firm that specialized in the construction of small-scale renewable energy projects.  In 1990 he went to work the Potomac Electric Power Company in Washington, D.C. where he advised senior management on energy policy issues.  Between 1993 and 1996, Chuck served as Assistant Attorney General for utilities for the Commonwealth of Virginia and in 1996 he went to work for the Edison Electric Institute where he lobbied on behalf of electric utilities.  Currently Chuck is a partner in the law firm of Foster & Jamison, a firm that specializes in environmental and energy law issues.
