Design Engineer

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Design Engineering Manager, develops new designs, processes, and materials for customer orders.  Responsible for the preparation of drawings, specifications, sequences, and other related engineering documentation. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducts engineering studies on design for products, associated and subsystems components, and structures.
  • Analyzes engineering proposals, process requirements, and related technical data pertaining to design.
  • Applies engineering principles to design, modify, or develop facilities, testing, machines, equipment or processes.
  • Conducts analytical studies on engineering proposals to develop design for products, equipment, machines, associated and subsystems components, and structures.
  • Uses computer-assisted engineering software and equipment.
  • Analyzes data to determine feasibility of product proposal.
  • Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs that can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods.
  • Analyzes engineering proposals, process requirements, and related technical data pertaining to industrial machinery and equipment design.
  • May determine feasibility of designing new plant equipment or modifying existing facilities considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors.
  • Confers with research personnel to clarify or resolve problems and develops design.
  • Prepares or directs preparations of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Directs and coordinates manufacturing or building of prototype product or system.
  • Plans and develops experimental test programs.
  • Prevents or eliminates defects in new or existing products.
  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Confers with research and other engineering personnel and prepares design modifications as required.
  • Evaluates engineering test results for possible application to development of systems or other uses.
  • Studies engineering and technical publications to keep abreast of technological changes and developments in industry.
  • Support of and involvement in company, department, and/or safety policies, procedures, programs and activities.
  • Maintenance of a clean and orderly work area.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Engineering or related technical field with five or more years related experience and/or training in a related field.  Master’s Degree in a related field preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software. 
  • ASME (Section VIII & Section I), PED, ATEX, NEC, NACE, ANSI, and TEMA code experience and familiarity preferred.  Systems specific pressure vessel, piping, pump, fluid transfer, heat transfer design experience.  Familiar with manufacturing processes such as heavy equipment mfg., welding technology, control panel, materials technology, manufacturing methods technology.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
